Judges, Lawyers, and Criminals: Where Justice Stands and Mercy Begins Introduction

In courtrooms, people’s lives intersect with the texts of the law. There are judges who seek the truth, lawyers who fight for their clients, and defendants—some guilty, some innocent.
But before verdicts are delivered, there is another balance just as important as justice… the balance of mercy.

Innocence and Injustice in History

History is filled with heartbreaking stories of people who spent decades behind bars, only to later be proven innocent. Some left prison with white hair and bent backs, after losing the best years of their lives due to mistakes in investigations, testimonies, or evidence.

These stories remind us that justice is not infallible, and that even the smallest doubt can be the difference between a free life and life behind bars.

Judges – Guardians of the Law

  • A judge is bound by the law, which provides the framework within which they rule on cases.
  • Their mission is not revenge or punishment, but to apply justice based on the evidence and testimonies presented.
  • If a judge finds even a 1% doubt in a person’s guilt, they rule for acquittal, in line with the principle: “It is better to acquit a guilty person than to punish an innocent one based on doubt.”

Lawyers – The Makers of Defense

  • A lawyer works to protect their client through reasoning, law, and evidence.
  • They may use legal loopholes or highlight small details in the case that could introduce doubt in the judge’s mind.
  • However, lawyers do not decide the verdict—the judge does.

Defendants – Not All Are the Same

Most criminal cases (theft, murder, fraud…) occur in moments when a person loses control over themselves:

  • Extreme anger.
  • Urgent need.
  • Rash reaction.

In those moments, the person has no one to blame but themselves, because they chose to act.
The fault is not with the judge or the law, but with the act itself… and sometimes the real cause of ruin is friends, relatives, strangers, or one’s own decisions.

Mercy Before Justice

  • Laws may be strict, but mercy remains an essential human element in rulings.
  • Sometimes a judge may choose leniency or even grant a second chance if they believe the defendant deserves it.
  • Mercy does not cancel justice—it complements it.

A Message to Parents

Instill in your children the understanding that the judicial system is not their enemy—it is their protection and defense when they follow the laws and respect the system.
Teach them that justice and mercy go hand in hand, and that respecting the law is their first line of defense for their future and reputation.

The Golden Advice

  • Trust the judiciary, as it is the society’s tool for achieving justice.
  • Remember that trust is a choice, and respecting the law is the best way to protect yourself.
  • Don’t let anger, need, or impulse drive you to an action you will regret—regret will not undo the consequences.
