A new breakthrough in hypertension treatment is underway as researchers from Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS Trust begin trials of a long-acting injectable medication for high blood pressure.
This innovative approach marks the first time a long-lasting injection is tested to manage hypertension, potentially changing the way millions control their condition. Traditionally, patients take daily pills like ACE inhibitors to keep blood pressure in check.
Dr. Manish Saxena, the study's lead and deputy clinical director, expressed excitement about this novel method, highlighting the collaboration with Alnylam Pharmaceuticals to advance modern medicine.
The trial will include around 630 participants across the UK and is funded by Alnylam, with Barts Health NHS Trust as the main trial site. If successful, this treatment could reduce risks of heart attacks and strokes by providing medication every six months instead of daily pills.
The study is expected to run for three years and has backing from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Similar injectable drugs for cholesterol have recently been approved, paving the way for such advancements.
